On Sunday night a fire broke out in the bush and threatened to head towards the settlements in the strong wind. Many of the farm workers had attended a funeral that evening, which in Zambia means celebrating the deceased’s life and getting rather drunk afterwards, so it was difficult to find any sober tractor drivers. But lots of people chipped in to help with the back-burning. This involves fighting fire with fire – using lines of controlled fires to deplete the fuel supply ahead of the wild fire. I managed to get a few shots of the process and no-one was harmed by the fire in the end!
